Going Buggy!

Two of the most disgusting things that have ever happened to me happened twice in one day. I went to bed with my skin crawling. On Saturday morning I got back from my run to find Jayson entertaining Aidan in his crib again while Jay sawed logs. Jayson told me in so many words that Dad was sleeping and wasn't opening his eyes. How does he sleep through a three year old's attempts to wake him? I don't know...one of life's mysteries. Anyway, I needed to multitask so that I could get in an ice bath while my muscles were still warm. I decided to make a pot of oatmeal that everyone would like (except Jay, although he did manage to gag it down) and wouldn't take long. I cooked the oatmeal while doing five other things, tossed some brown sugar and raisins (perhaps my downfall) on top, and crammed it into every one's mouths as fast as I could. I thought there seemed to be little mini raisins mixed in. Whatever. It tasted great and filled us up. Aidan seemed to especially enjoy it. I left the oatmeal container (a cardboard cylinder) sitting on the counter while I showered. Half an hour later, I picked the container up to put the lid on and three little black beetles(?) fell out onto the counter to join the other three that were already scuttling away. Peering into the container, I discovered several more attempting to escape. Were those the mini raisins? Perhaps. Shortly after sanitizing and inspecting the pantry (nothing else that I could find thank goodness)I put Aidan into the bath. I put some bath toys in the water and sat down on the floor by the tub. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something writhing in the corner. A grub. A weevil grub I think. Now the gross part (no, eating them was not the worst of it). Aidan was happily sucking away on his bath toy and gave it a little squeeze. Out shot another grub! Grub is a less gross term for larva. After sanitizing the bathroom and throwing away all bath toys that squeeze water in and out of them (Bethany told me they were gross once, and I really should have listened.) I looked everything up on the Internet. The beetles looked most like Weevils indigenous to India, but were probably just regular old wheat weevils. We haven't come down with symptoms of E-coli infection, probably because I boiled them for so long before we ate them. I don't know how they managed to get on the bathroom floor. I feel like I am a pretty clean person, although now that we have two children I have slackened in some of my cleaning habits. I went to bed checking under my pillow for bugs and feeling like a naughty housewife. I just pray that Jayson doesn't mention it during show and tell or something.

Love it! Love it! Love it! It is probably just preparing you to live a third world country some day. Nothing like a little extra protein in your oatmeal! Hee hee! I want you to know that people pay money to eat that kind of stuff. Seriously. It is a delicatessen in some places like Thailand and China. Yum. Perhaps Aidan is preparing for a mission one day in those areas! Great head start! You can expect Jayson to share these great stories in Show & Tell. Children usually tell everything and then some! :) I have been highly entertained.

Gross!! But highly entertaining! Reminds me of rice krispie treats I made at Grama Lula Snow's house. I had planned to share them with my friends except that I ended up canceling the video night. So I proceeded to eat half the pan over the next 24 hours, only to then take a closer look and realize they were full of slater bugs. I felt squirmy for days...but I guess what doesn't kill you, will fill you. Ugh!

Jayson singing "The World is So Big"

In case you have trouble understanding...

The world is so big and oh, so round
And even God's creations are almost so found.
Brothers and sisters and trees so tall,
animals big and animals small.
The world is so big and oh, so round
And even God's creations are almost so found...
etc, etc.

The correct words are:
The world is so big and oh, so round
And in it God's creations are found.
Mountains and valleys and trees so tall,
Animals big and animals small.
The world is so big and oh, so round
God loves us all, His blessings abound

A Photographer in the Making

Jayson loves taking pictures! He took most of these while we were on vacation in Washington and a few at home. I love that he takes pictures of himself. He then asks me to show them to him and he giggles a little when he sees what terrific shots he's gotten.
